Season One, Interleague Bout 4
Lover's Quarrel
Feb. 25, 2007
Virginia Beach
The Dominion Derby Girls successfully defended their home rink with a 192-123 win over the visiting River City Roller Girls this past Sunday, improving their 2007 record to 2-0. The contest was the RCR's first inter-league bout, but they showed the tenacity and aggression of a veteran league.
After an evenly scored first jam, the DDG's Sweet N. Lowdown and T. Rex Ya Face skated back-to-back 9 point jams to open a 22-9 lead over the girls from Richmond. The Dominion blockers picked up the defense the rest of the first period, not allowing the RCR to score more than 5 points on any jam. Meanwhile, the DDG jammers kept up the attack, averaging more than 5 points a jam. The DDG's offense and defense especially shined in the ninth jam, when The Ruffian racked up 13 points versus Booty Queen's 4. The Dominion Derby Girls skated into the first intermission with a commanding 72-32 lead.
The River City Rollergirls were not deterred, though, outscoring the home team 38-35 over the first 8 jams of the second period. The DDG's managed to regain their old form, though, closing out the period on a 21-7 run, making the score 129-77 when the second buzzer sounded.
River City started came out of the gates quickly again in the third period, with back-to-back 8 point jams skated by Nitrous Oxide and Aversion Mary. Unfortunately, that's where the momentum stopped for the visiting team. The DDG blockers ratcheted the defense up again, led by Becka the Wrecka's numerous jammer take-outs, and did not allow their rivals from up I-64 to score more than 4 points in any of the last nine jams. The Ruffian led the way offensively down the stretch, putting up 7 and 8 point jams for the DDGs.
The River City Rollergirls proved that they have a bright future, utilizing a startling nine different jammers in their inter-league debut. Nitrous Oxide led River City with 25 points on 8 jams. The experienced DDGs proved to be too much for the young RCRs, though, controlling the tempo by earning lead jammer status on 22 of 35 jams. The Dominion Derby Girls' scoring efforts were led by The Ruffian's 54 points on 8 jams, and emerging star, T. Rex Ya Face, who earned lead jammer status in 6 of her 7 jams, and scored a total of 49 points.
The Dominion Derby Girls are slated to take on the Long Island Roller Rebels March 18th, in Philadelphia, as part of the East Coast Extravaganza. The details of the River City Roller Girls' next inter-league bout have yet to be determined.
